Cedar Springs Farm is owned by Curt and Priscilla Barnes of Galatia, IL and managed
Norman Wiemken and their son Tim. Their farm is over a 100 years old and is named for the tall,
old cedar trees that grew around the farm. This was Indian country and traces of their existence are still found
on the grounds. The house and barns are situated on a hill overlooking the pastures below. This is a small
operation with good horses. The Barnes' run it themselves and leave no details unattended. The breeding and
handling of all mares is also done by the Barnes family. They raise 4 to 6 babies per year and concentrate on
good bloodlines, great dispositions and super movers.
The Barnes' first horses were safe mounts for Priscilla and their son Timothy to ride down the road. Neighbors of theirs, Tom and Glenda Wilson were in the horse business though, and they raised Appaloosas. Talks over the fences about horses led to the Wilson's showing Curt and Priscilla around to some of local Appaloosa breeders. The first serious purchase was a little show mare named Luckie Britches from Carla Hays (now Johnson). At the same time the Barnes looked at and liked a mare owned by Gary Cunningham and trained by Sue Scobee -- a mare called SSP'S Misty. Misty was a 4 year old and Sue had shown her a good bit with a lot of success.

Misty Eyed

Curt purchased Misty, and she ultimately became the bedrock of the Barnes breeding program. Curt and Priscilla discovered long ago that they were better off raising their show horses -- then you know just what you have, and you know the horse. Misty's first baby, by a Quarter Horse son of Two Eyed Jack, produced the great, great all around mare Misty Eyed. She went on to win the World Championship in trail six times! Twice in Jr Trail with Tom Wilson of Galatia, IL and four times in Sr Trail with
Dave Parlier of Gainesville, TX..
Tim, was also able to get his Youth Lifetime Superior Award in 1992 and the Non-Pro Supreme Lifetime Championship Award in 1994 the first year he became a Non-Pro
with this great mare!

Zippos Misty Lady

It was not until a few babies later, that the real niche was found with the cross between SSP'S Misty and the legendary
Zippo Pine Bar AQHA. The first of which produced Zippos Misty Lady!

Zippos Mr Misty

The next breeding resulted in Zippos Mr. Misty, the stallion who fulfilled all the requirements the Barnes were looking for in a show horse and stallion. He became the foundation they continue to build on. With him, the Barnes were able to raise horses that are built to move, with dispositions and athleticism -- and horses you should be able to show as 2 and 3 year olds in western pleasure or hunter under saddle, and then go on and do other things with. It was with great saddness that Zippos Mr Misty passed away on
November 8, 2001. He is greatly missed but will
live on through the outstanding babies he has
produced during his short life.

The Barnes' have raised other great horses -- Jack Quest, multiple World and National Championship winner, who was High Point English Horse at the 1998 World and also the 1999 National show; also the super halter horse CR Dreams; and the halter filly I'm Jackie's Dream, a World and National Champion.

And SSP'S Misty continued to produce great babies who have gone to be great producers themselves, as is evidenced by her grandchildren Zippos Misty Lad, Sweet Misty Zippo, Zippos Mr Joe Quest, Freddy Freeloper, One Hot Chip, A Ladys Invitation and Choclate Lady Fingrs to name just a few that Cedar Springs Farm has bred and raised.

Zippos Misty Lad was the highest placing horse in the Appaloosa Pleasure Bred Futurity at the 2000 World Show. He was ridden by Jon Barry and the winner of $4600.

Freddy Freeloper is the second horse the Barnes have raised to win this prestigious futurity. He was ridden by Steve Heckaman at the 2002 World Show.

Freddy Freeloper

Freddy, was sired by Zippos Mr Misty and out of Chips Fancy Zip who is an own daughter of
Zips Chocolate Chip (AQHA).
After winning the Appaloosa Pleasure Bred Futurity in 2002 he went on to win the Riechert Celebration 3 Yr Old Open Color Western Pleasure with Monica Baker in 2003 (he is still to this day the only Appaloosa to win this class at the Riechert!). In 2004 Freddy was the High Point Western Horse at the National Appaloosa Show
shown by Kara Baker. .
That same year at the 2004 World show Tim and Freddy won the World Championships in
Non Pro Western Pleasure, Non Pro Horsemanship and the
Youth/Non Pro ApPHA Western Pleasure Futurity.

No other horse and rider have achieved this accomplishment at the same World show!
It was with great saddness that Freddy was lost to this world after purchase in 2007. Freddy, was such a special, talented individual and touched the lives of many people.

2009 brought both joy and sadness to Cedar Springs Farm. Our beloved Hall of Fame Mare
SSP'S Misty passed away at the age of 30. She left us peacefully with her family by her side. To this date, she has produced more medallion winners than any other Appaloosa mare in history.
Her 14 foals have earned an excess of 2,100+ ApHC points!
In 2009 our 2007 mare A Horse Called Wanda won the Two Year Old Snaffle Bit Hunter Under Saddle
at the Appaloosa National Championship show. Also, at the 2009 ApHC World Show our 2007 mare
Choclate Lady Fingrs won the Two Year Old Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure! Choclate Lady Fingrs dam is Zippos Misty Lady who is out of SSP'S Misty. You can say that the history of
Cedar Springs Farm has come full circle........
